Whipple's disease is a malabsorption disease. It
interferes with the body's ability to absorb certain nutrients. The
disease causes weight loss, irregular breakdown of carbohydrates and fats,
resistance to insulin, and malfunctions of the immune system. When
recognized and treated, Whipple's disease can be cured. Untreated, the
disease is usually fatal.

Definitions of Whipple's Disease:
A chronic systemic infection by a gram-positive bacterium, Tropheryma whippelii, mainly affecting the SMALL INTESTINE but also the JOINTS; CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM; and the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. The disease is characterized by fat deposits in the INTESTINE MUCOSA and LYMPH NODES, malabsorption, DIARRHEA with fatty stools, MALNUTRITION, and ARTHRITIS.
