Prevalence and Incidence of Toxoplasmosis

Prevalance of Toxoplasmosis:

More than 60 million in USA but few have symptoms (DPD) ... see also overview of Toxoplasmosis.

Prevalance Rate:

approx 1 in 4 or 22.06% or 60 million people in USA [Source statistic for calcuation: "More than 60 million in USA but few have symptoms (DPD)" -- see also general information about data sources]

Toxoplasmosis: Rare Disease

Toxoplasmosis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Toxoplasmosis, or a subtype of Toxoplasmosis, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, who are a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when if affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Toxoplasmosis as a "rare disease". More information about Toxoplasmosis is available from Orphanet

Toxoplasmosis Prevalence: Book Excerpts

Undiagnosed prevalence of Toxoplasmosis:

less than 60 million; most do not have symptoms (DPD) ... see also misdiagnosis of Toxoplasmosis.

Undiagnosed prevalence rate:

approx 1 in 4 or 22.06% or 60 million people in USA [about data] ... Note: this rate calculation uses the following statistic: less than 60 million; most do not have symptoms (DPD)

Lifetime risk for Toxoplasmosis:

Up to 80% of urban people show exposure to toxoplasmosis; most have become naturally immune.

Prevalance of Toxoplasmosis:

More than 60 million people in the United States probably are infected with the Toxoplasma parasite, but very few have symptoms because the immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness. (Source: excerpt from Toxoplasmosis: DPD)

    Toxoplasmosis: Toxoplasmosis - epidemiology
    (The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)

    • The rate of acquired infection, usually asymptomatic, varies widely through the world and increases with age.
    • 70–90% of children with congenital toxoplasmosis are asymptomatic at birth. Late sequelae (e.g., chorioretinitis, mental retardation, seizures, sensorineural hearing loss) occur in >50% of untreated infants considered asymptomatic at birth.

    Toxoplasmosis - incidence

Worldwide, the incidence of congenital infection ranges from 1–7/1,000 live births; in the US, incidence is estimated at 0.1–1/1,000 live births. It is believed that 400–4,000 infants are born annually in the US with congenital toxoplasmosis.

    Toxoplasmosis - prevalence

Seroprevalence rates among pregnant women vary from 4–80% worldwide; in the US, a serologic survey found 15% of women of child-bearing age were seropositive.

    About prevalence and incidence statistics:

The term 'prevalence' of Toxoplasmosis usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Toxoplasmosis at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Toxoplasmosis refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Toxoplasmosis diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.
