Glossary for Tourette Syndrome
- ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a mental and behavioral disorder characterized by behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, inattention, concentration difficulty, and other mental symptoms.
Typically, ADHD and associated hyperactivity is known as a childhood disorder, although ADD/ADHD in adults is known to
be under-diagnosed.
It is distinguished from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) which has a reduced focus on hyperactivity type symptoms.
- Autism: Childhood mental condition with social and communication difficulties.
- Behavioral disorders: Disorders affecting behavior and emotional wellbeing
- Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain
- Chorea: Any disorder causing involuntary movement or spasms.
- Choreoathetosis: Choreoathetosis is the occurrence of involuntary movements in a combination of chorea and athetosis.
- Drug abuse: Addiction to any of various illicit drugs.
- Eye blinking symptoms: Problems with the ability to blink or excessive blinking
- Facial spasms: Spasms or twitches of facial muscles
- Focal seizures: A deficiency of folate in the body
- Mental illness: Any psychological syndrome
- Mental retardation - dysmorphism - hypogonadism - diabetes: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes and facial and skull abnormalities.
- Movement symptoms: Changes to movement or motor abilities
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder: Behavioral disorder with obsessive thoughts and compulsive acts.
- Pervasive developmental disorders: Group of developmental disorders often recognized before 3 years of age.
- Psychiatric disorders: Any condition that affects ones mind
- Psychological disorders: Any condition that affects ones mind
- Restless Legs Syndrome: A neurological disorder where legs develop and crawling, aching skin sensation which is relived by moving the legs.
- Schizophrenia: A psychiatric disorder characterized by hallucinations and delusional beliefs where a person is unable to distinguish between reality and imagination. The condition tends to have a chronic nature and can be severely debilitating if treatment isn't sought.
- Tardive Dyskinesia: The toxic neurological side effects of neuroleptic drugs that have been used long term.
- Tic: Involuntary muscle twitches
- Tics: Involuntary muscle twitches
- Tuberous sclerosis: A rare genetic disorder characterized by harmartomatous skin nodules, seizures, phakomata and bone lesions.
