Torsion

Torsion: Introduction

Usually refers to the twisting of the spermatic cord (testicular torsion) but may also refer to twisting of the ovaries (ovarian torsion). The twisting of these tissues cuts off blood supply to nearby tissue and can cause permanent damage - treatment is needed within six hours in order to preserve function of the testicle or ovary. Often there is no obvious cause but ovarian torsion usually occurs during pregnancy and testicular torsion can result from injury to the testicle or strenuous exercise.
