Misdiagnosis of Urinary tract infection
Urinary tract infection: Related Misdiagnoses
Antibiotics often causes diarrhea: The use of antibiotics are very likely
to cause some level of diarrhea in patients.
The reason is that antibiotics kill off not only "bad" bacteria,
but can also kill the "good" bacteria in the gut.
This leads to "digestive imbalance" where there are too few remaining "good"
bacteria in the digestive system.
The treatment is typically to use "probiotics", such as by eating yoghurt cultures
containing more of the good bacteria.
See digestive imbalance and probiotics.
Rare type of breast cancer without a lump: There is a less common form
of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer.
Its symptoms can be an inflammation of the breast tissue, such as with a breast rash
with redness and warmth, but not necessarily a physical breast lump.
This type of breast cancer should be considered as an uncommon possibility
for certain types of breast symptoms.
Interstitial cystitis an under-diagnosed bladder condition: The medical
condition of interstitial cystitic is a bladder condition that can be
misdiagnosed as various conditions such as overactive bladder or other causes of pelvic pain.
This condition can cause chronic pelvic pain or symptoms of urinary incontinence,
similar to overactive bladder.
Millions of patients may be misdiagnosed - an estimated third of the 9 million women with
chronic pelvic pain (CPP) or 4.5 million of the 17 million women with overactive bladder syndrome
do not respond well to treatment, and may have interstitial cystitis rather than their given diagnosis.
In other words, about 6 million US women may have misdiagnosed interstitial cystitis.
See interstitial cystitis or overactive bladder, or incontinence.
Fever of less than 3 days duration: Fever of less than 3 days duration is commonly encountered in general
practice and is most likely to be case of viral infection of the
respiratory tract. It is important however to be on a lookout for other
infections such as urinary tract infection and pneumonia. A complete general
physical examination as well as routine blood tests and urine examination will
help come to a diagnosis. The majority of the patients can be managed conservatively.
If the fever persists for more than 4 days a less common infection must be
suspected since most viral infections subside in 4 days.
FUO in children: Fever of unknown origin in
children is usually transient and subsides within 4- 5 days. Majority of them
are of viral aetiology. The common causes of fever in children differ from that
of adults. Some of the infectious causes include pneumonia, pharyngitis, sinusitis,
meningitis and urinary tract infection. In some case it could be due to rheumatoid
arthritis and rheumatic fever or neoplastic conditions like lymphoma and leukaemia.
Urinary tract infection: Possibly Deadly Misdiagnoses
Some of the causes, which may potentially be dangerous or fatal
if left undiagnosed, may include:
