SPEECH ABNORMALITIES

These are a group of speech abnormalities that do not fit into the category of aphasia or dysarthria. These are almost always psychogenic in origin. Stammering speech is found in emotionally high-strung people and is probably due to psychological trauma in childhood. It is common in left-handed children who were forced to use the right hand. Lolling speech is typified by difficulty with consonants. It is more common in mental retardation, but it can be found in otherwise normal persons . Idioglossia is a substitution of consonants, making the speech very difficult to understand. It may be associated with high-tone deafness. Perseveration means the repetition of a word or sentence. When a patient repeats a word or sentence that he or she just heard, it is called echolalia . Both of the last two conditions occur in schizophrenia, but perseveration may occur in organic brain syndrome, especially Korsakoff's psychosis. Mutism is often due to schizophrenia or hysteria, but occasionally it is due to total motor aphasia.
