- Physical examination
- Absent leg pulses may suggest acute arterial embolism
- Swollen ankle, swollen tender warm calf may suggest deep vein thrombosis
- Neurological examination to detect signs of stroke e.g. weak or paralyzed limbs, increased tone of the affected limbs, difficulty with speech and swallowing
- Eye examination to look for signs of retinal artery or vein thrombosis
