The first step in the treatment of cervical cancer is prevention. Although guidelines vary, it is often recommended that teenage girls and women begin having regular Pap smear screening tests within three years of becoming sexually active or no later than age 21. Prevention also includes abstaining from sex or having sex only within the framework of a monogamous relationship, in which neither partner is infected with a sexually transmitted disease or been exposed to HPV. Prevention also includes always using a condom for each sex act.
A vaccine, called Gardasil, has also been developed that provides protection from the types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers. However, Gardasil does not prevent all types of cervical cancers, and routine Pap screens are still recommended for females who have been vaccinated.
Once cervical cancer has developed, treatment is individualized to the individual case and the stage of cancer. Cervical dysplagia or cervical cancer in its early stages may be treated using a variety of outpatient procedures, such as laser surgery, which uses a light beam to kill abnormal cervical cells. The LEEP procedure uses electrical current to eliminate abnormal cervical cells, and cryosurgery kills abnormal cells by freezing them.
For more advanced cervical cancer, treatment is more involved and may include hysterectomy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
