The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Bleeding after sex includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Vaginal speculum examination - to examine for cervical ectropion/erosion (due to post-partum or oral contraceptive pill); cervical polyp.
    • Pap smear - to test for cervical cancer.
    • Vaginal and Cervical swab for microscopy and culture and /or PCR - to test for causes of vaginitis e.g. gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, candida, Chlamydia.
    • First pass Urine PCR - for Chlamydia and gonorrhea.
    • Pregnancy test - to differentiate causes of bleeding in pregnancy (e.g. placenta praevia, placental abruption , hydatidiform mole) from other causes of bleeding after sex.
    • Cervix biopsy - of any polyps or inflamed areas.
    • Colposcopy - may help further differentiate a cervical lesion.
    • Endometrial sampling - to test for uterine cancer.
    • Dilation and curettage - may be necessary to diagnose uterine cancer and hydatidiform mole.
  • Blood tests
    • Bleeding disorder screen if there is a personal and/r family history of bleeding e.g. full blood count , platelet count, coagulation studies
