SUCCUSSION SOUNDS
Most of us have heard these sounds on ourselves after consuming a large quantity of liquid. If they are heard with the stethoscope in a patient with abdominal disturbance, they are of pathologic significance. When there are associated hyperactive and/or high-pitched bowel sounds, intestinal obstruction should be considered. When there are hypoactive bowel sounds, paralytic ileus or peritonitis should be considered.
Succussion sounds coming from the chest are due to hydropneumothorax or hemopneumothorax. The chest x-ray should make the diagnosis obvious. Other rare causes of succussion sounds are acute gastric dilatation, chronic pyloric obstruction, subdiaphragmatic abscess, and pneumoperitoneum. The diagnostic workup will be determined by associated symptoms and signs (vomiting,
