During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of High blood pressure.
Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing
your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information
you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis.
Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- Previous history of elevated blood pressure? - Date of initial diagnosis and levels of elevated blood pressure.
- Previous treatment for the elevated blood pressure? - what medications have you used in the past, what have been the result and any side effects from them.
- Past medical history? - heart attacks , strokes, peripheral vascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus or recent weight gain.
- Other cardiovascular risk factors? - e.g. obesity, elevated cholesterol, impaired glucose tolerance, smoking, salt intake, alcohol consumption, exercise levels, chronic consumption of large amounts of pain killers especially those containing phenacetin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

Article Excerpts about High blood pressure
Blood pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of your
blood vessels. Blood pressure that remains high over time is called
hypertension. Extra fluid in your body increases the amount of fluid in
your blood vessels and makes your blood pressure higher. Narrow or clogged
blood vessels also raise blood pressure. (Source: excerpt from High Blood Pressure and Kidney Disease: NIDDK)
