Misdiagnosis and Developmental problems

Rare copper disease insidious and misdiagnosed: Wilson's disease (a form of copper overload) is a rare disorder that has a slow and insidious onset that can often fail to be diagnosed. Copper builds up in the liver and in the brain, usually in the late childhood, teens, or 20's. Brain changes can lead to a variety of neurological and psychological type symptoms, such as speech symptoms, language difficulty, behavioral symptoms, and various others. Possible misdiagnoses include depression, behavioral disorders, schizophrenia, mental retardation, learning difficulty, anxiety disorders, hysteria, and other psychological disorders. Physical symptoms related to liver damage, such as jaundice, often appear later, leading to the delayed diagnosis. See overview of Wilson's disease....more »

Diagnostic tests for Developmental problems:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Developmental problems. Some of these are listed below :

  • General appearance and observation
    • Looking for any dysmorphic ( abnormality of shape) features of face and body - e.g. Down syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Soto's syndrome.
    • Observe the child's behavior and interaction with yourself. If child is alert, interested in new objects, keen to explore and relates in a friendly manner, a developmental problem is more likely because of an isolated condition rather than global retardation
    • If child obese it can delay gross motor function
    • Observe infant health clinic booklet - to check growth patterns of weight, height and head circumference.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Developmental problems. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you noticed the developmental problems? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • What specific problems are you concerned about with development? - e.g. gross motor skills, fine motor function, language and hearing or social skills and understanding.
  • What are the details of the pregnancy, birth and new born? - may detect prenatal infections, prenatal drugs and toxins, birth trauma, neonatal infection as a possible cause of developmental problems.
  • Was the child born prematurely? - must make allowance for prematurity i.e. if birth was at 32 weeks gestation, 8 weeks should be subtracted from the chronological age when assessing development, so that milestones would be expected to be reached 2 months later than a baby born at full term.
  • Was the child born with any birth defects? - e.g. any abnormality either structural or functional, identified at any age, but that began before birth such as anencephaly phenylketonuria, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, fetal alcohol syndrome, Down syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypothyroidism.

See Diagnosis Checklist for Developmental problems (20 listings)

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Developmental problems) may include:

  • Impulsive behavior, inattentiveness and hyperactivity? - may suggest attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
  • Poor social interaction and language delay in the child? - e.g. poor eye contact, aloneness, difficulties relating to peers - may suggest autism as cause of developmental delay.
  • Age when walking? - e.g. if not walking by 18 months consider Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
