Glossary for Streptococcal Infections
- Abscess: General name for any pus-filled lump or swelling
- Acute rheumatic fever: Bacterial joint infection with risk of heart complications.
- Altered mental status: linked to confusion, delirium, obtundation, stupor, and coma
- Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
- Bacteremia: A condition where there is the presence of bacteria in the blood
- Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
- Cellulitis: Inflammation of skin or subcutaneous tissues.
- Chickenpox: Common viral infection.
- Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
- Death: The cessation of life
- Diseases contagious from intravenous needles: Diseases that can be contracted from intravenous needles
- Endocarditis: Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
- Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
- Gas gangrene: A condition characterized by death of tissue usually followed by bacterial invasion and putrefaction
- Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
- Group A Streptococcal Infections: "Strep" bacteria responsible for strep throat, impetigo and some other strep conditions.
- Group B Streptococcal Infections: "Strep" bacteria that may affect newborns and the immune-compromised; compare strep A.
- Impetigo: Contagious skin rash from bacteria
- Invasive group A Streptococcal disease: Infection with Group A Streptococcal bacteria
- Joint pain: Pain affecting the joints
- Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
- Meningococcal disease: Dangerous bacterial infection causing meningitis or bacteremia.
- Myalgia: Muscle aches and pains
- Neonatal sepsis: Bacterial blood infection in an infant under 3 months of age.
- Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
- PANDAS: A rare disorder characterized by the association of a tic disorder or OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) with a streptococcal infection and neuropsychiatric symptoms. The symptoms can start suddenly and recovery is slow with frequent relapses. It is believed that the infection affects a part of the brain that is involved with movement.
- Peritonitis: Inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity
- Pharyngitis: Inflammation or infection of the larynx in the throat
- Pneumococcal pneumonia: Lung pneumnoia from streptococcus bacteria.
- Pneumococcus: Bacteria causing ear infections, pneumococcal pneumonia, and pneumococcal meningitis.
- Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
- Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis: Kidney complication (glomerulonephritis) following streptococcal infection
- Puerperal fever: Delayed uterine infection after childbirth
- Rheumatic fever: An inflammatory disorder that can occur as a complication of untreated streptococcal bacterial infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The condition may affect the brain, skin, heart and joints.
- Scarlet fever: A complication of infection from strep bacteria such as strep throat.
- Sepsis: The presence of pathological micro-organisms in the blood
- Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
- Strep throat: Streptococcal bacterial throat infection.
- Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome: Toxic shock from streptococcal bacteria infection.
- Tonsilitis: Inflammation of the tonsils in the throat.
- Wound Infection: Infection of a skin wound.
