Glossary for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

  • AIDS: A term given to HIV patients who have a low CD4 count (below 200) which means that they have low levels of a type of immune cell called T-cells. AIDS patients tend to develop opportunistic infections and cancers. Opportunistic infections are infections that would not normally affect a person with a healthy immune system. The HIV virus is a virus that attacks the body's immune system.

  • Chancroid: An sexually transmitted disease caused by the Haemophilus ducreyi bacteria and is characterized by painful genital ulceration.
  • Chlamydia: Common sexually transmitted disease often without symptoms.
  • Crohn's disease: Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the digestive system. It is one of a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel disease. The disease can affect any area from the mouth to the anus. It often affects the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum.

  • Cytomegalovirus: A easily transmissible viral infection that is common but generally causes no symptoms except in infants and people with weakened immune systems.

  • Gonorrhea: Common sexually transmitted disease often without symptoms.
  • Granuloma inguinale: Granulomous disease spread sexually.
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • HTLV: Virus associated with affecting the immune system.
  • Hepatitis B: Viral liver infection spread by sex or body fluids.
  • Hepatitis C: Viral liver infection spread by blood.
  • Herpesvirus: A group of DNA viruses that occur in humans
  • Human Papillomavirus: Very common sexually transmitted disease causing genital warts and associated with certain cancers.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Any type of digestive condition caused by bowel inflammation.
  • Interstitial cystitis: A rare condition involving inflammatory disease of the bladder which progresses slowly.
  • Low birth weight: When the weight of a new born baby is below average
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum: Type of chlamydia (sexually transmitted disease)
  • Male sexual conditions: Any condition that affects the ability of a male to have sexual relations
  • Molluscum contagiosum: Common wart-causing virus.
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Non-Specific Urethritis: Urethral infection usually sexually transmitted
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Infection of the womb and fallopian tubes.
  • Pelvic pain: Pelvic pain is usually elated to pain due to visceral organs situated in the pelvic area such as uterus, bladder..
  • Penis discharge: Fluid discharge from the penis
  • Premature Birth: Early delivery of a fetus (before 37th week).
  • Pubic lice: Lice in pubic area that are spread sexually.
  • Rubella: A contagious viral infection caused by the Rubella virus which produces a rash and lymph node swelling. It can have serious implication in pregnant women as the virus can be transmitted through the placenta and cause serious fetal defects or even fetal death.
  • Scabies: Mite infection of the skin common in institutions.
  • Sexual Conditions: Any condition that affects sexual function
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
  • Toxoplasmosis: Infection often caught from cats and their feces.
  • Trichomoniasis: Sexually transmitted parasitic infection.
  • Ulcerative colitis: Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.
  • Under-diagnosed conditions: Any medical condition that is undiagnosed
  • Ureaplasma urealyticum: A condition which is characterized by urethritis in males and genital tract infections in females
  • Vagina conditions: Any condition that affects the female vagina
  • Vaginal discharge: Discharge from the vagina as a symptom
  • Vaginitis: Vaginal inflammation or infection of any type.
  • Vague symptoms: Vague, unclear, mild or non-specific symptoms
