Medical Research Breakthroughs and Sinusitis
Dont reach out for those Antibiotics: The Cochrane Systematic Review has found that even without
receiving antibiotics four out of five patients with simple sinusitis improved
within two weeks in primary care. The recovery speeded up only marginally on
giving antibiotics, thus questioning the practice of administering antibiotics
in all cases of sinusitis. Sinusitis is one of the most common reason for
visiting a doctor and accounts for approximately 15 to 21% of the outpatient
prescriptions for antibiotics. Although most of the cases of sinusitis are
caused by viral infections and cannot even be affected by antibiotics, only a
few of the cases have additional bacterial infection and may actually have any
benefit. Since it is very hard to distinguish patients with bacterial
infections, antibiotics are over prescribed leading to antibiotic resistance in
bacteria. It is now recognized that countries with high antibiotic use
have high levels of antibiotic resistance. It is therefore important
to try to limit the unnecessary use of these drugs, and weigh the small
benefits of antibiotic treatment against the potential for adverse effects for
both individuals and the general population.
