Article Excerpts about Rubella
Measles, mumps, and rubella were once very common diseases in the
United States, but they have become rare because of the use of
vaccines to prevent them. As with many other diseases, measles,
mumps, and rubella generally are more severe in adults than in
children. Most adults are immune to all three infections because
they had them (or a vaccine) as children. (Source: excerpt from Shots for Safety - Age Page - Health Information: NIA)
Definitions of Rubella:
Acute infectious disease caused by the rubella virus and most often affecting children and nonimmune young adults, in which the virus enters the respiratory tract via droplet nuclei and spreads to the lymphatic system; ; usually benign; however transplacental infection of the fetus in the first trimester can cause death or severe developmental abnormalities.
- (Source - Diseases Database)
A contagious viral disease that is a milder form of measles lasting three or four days; can be damaging to a fetus during the first trimester
- (Source - WordNet 2.1)
Rubella is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Rubella, or a subtype of Rubella,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
