Psychiatric disorders: Introduction

Psychiatric disorders are mental health disorders. The term tends to be used for more severe mental illness rather than some of the less severe types of psychological disorders, because psychiatrists are able to prescribe medications and thus tend to treat more severe conditions than psychologists can treat with cognitive-behavioral therapy. Some of the more severe psychiatric conditions include psychotic conditions (e.g. schizophrenia) or major depressive disorder. On the other hand, the psychiatric profession does treat any type of mental illness. Some common examples of psychological/psychiatric disorders include anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, personality disorders and behavioral disorders. Psychiatric disorders are often treated by a psychologist or psychiatrist.
