Tonsils: The tonsils are structures of the immune system located in the pharynx and throat. The tonsils protect the body from potential infection of invading pathogens into the respiratory system and the digestive system. They possibly play a role in fighting pharyngeal infections and upper respiratory infections.
The tonsils are made up of lymphatic tissue and contain lymphocytes. Some types of tonsils contain tonsillar crypts. Tonsils include several different structures: the adenoids, tubal tonsils, lingual tonsils, and palatine tonsils. Conditions that can afflict the tonsils include tonsillitis, tonsil hypertrophy, tonsilloliths, and pharyngeal cancer.
