Meninges: The meninges are a group of membranes that enclose the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. The most important role of the meninges is to protect the central nervous system from infection and trauma. The meninges also support the spinal cord and blood vessels and contain the cerebral spinal fluid within in the subarachnoid space. The meninges are made up of three layers: the arachnoid mater, the pia mater, and the dura mater.
