Lingual Tonsils: The paired lingual tonsils are one type of tonsil and a part of the immune system. They are located on back of the tongue. The lingual tonsils protect the body from potential infection of invading pathogens into the respiratory system and the digestive system. They possibly play a role in fighting pharyngeal infections and upper respiratory infections.
The lingual tonsils are made up of lymphatic tissue and contain lymphocytes within tonsillar crypts. Conditions that can afflict the lingual tonsils include gastric reflux, food allergies, enlarged lingual tonsils, tonsillitis, and pharyngeal cancer.
