Summary Information: Left atrium

Left atrium: The left atrium of the heart is one of four chambers in the heart and a part of the cardiovascular system. The left atrium receives freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins. Blood flows through the left atrium into the left ventricle, where it is pumped to the other organs and areas of the body.

In a healthy person, the left atrium works with the other three chambers of the heart to transport blood in a regular, strong rhythm that is activated by an electrical conduction system. The left atrium of the heart is supplied with blood by the coronary arteries.
