Bile: Bile is a yellow fluid produced by the liver and has a variety of components and functions. Bile consists of bile salts and a yellow pigment called bilirubin. Bile flows from the liver to the gallbladder, where it is stored and concentrated. It is then released into the small intestine during digestion, where bile salts help to digest and breakdown fats (lipids). Bile also contains the waste products of the breakdown of old red blood cells in the form of bilirubin. Bilirubin is carried into the digestive system in bile and is mixed with feces and excreted.
