Glossary for Ovarian Cancer

• Abdominal Cancer: Growth of abnormal cells (tumour) affecting the organs in the abdominal cavity; may be due to primary growth of a tumour or spread from another tumour (metastases, secondary tumour)
• Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
• Abdominal swelling: Swelling or bloating of the abdomen
• Abdominal symptoms: Symptoms affecting the abdomen or digestive tract
• Ascites: Fluid accumulation in abdominal cavity
• Bowel Obstruction: Blockage in the bowel of the digestive tract.
• Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
• Chronic liver disease: Any form of chronic liver disease
• Colorectal cancer: Cancer of the colon (bowel) or rectum.
• Diverticular disease and diverticulitis:
• Dyspareunia: Vaginal pain after sexual intercourse
• Ectopic pregnancy: A condition where a fertilized egg embeds itself outside the uterus.
• Endometrial Cancer: Cancer of the endometrium (uterus lining).
• Endometriosis: Misplaced uterus tissue causing scar tissue.
• Endometritis: Inflammation of the endometrium (uterine lining)
• Female infertility: Infertility that affects the female
• Hirsutism: Increased hairiness
• Hydatidiform mole: A rare condition where an abnormal union between an egg and a sperm results in the formation of grape-like cysts instead of a baby. The growth is not malignant.
• Hysterectomy: The surgical removal of the female uterus
• Interstitial cystitis: A rare condition involving inflammatory disease of the bladder which progresses slowly.
• Krukenberg carcinoma: A form of ovarian cancer.
• Leiomyoma: Benign tumour of smooth muscle.
• Masculinisation: Increased male physical appearance in females
• Mesothelioma: Type of lung cancer associated with asbestos.
• No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
• Ovarian cysts: Cysts occurring in the ovaries.
• Ovary conditions: Any condition that affects a female ovary
• Pelvic Cancer: Any malignancy that is located in the anatomical location of the pelvis
• Pelvic mass: A mass that is palpable within the pelvis on examination.
• Polycystic ovary syndrome: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that affects approximately 5% of all women.
• Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
• Stomach cancer: Stomach or gastric cancer can develop in any part of the stomach and may spread throughout the stomach and to other organs
• Surgical errors/complications: Any error or complication that arises from surgery
• Teratoma: A neoplasm made up of different types of tissue
• Uterine fibroids: Benign nodules in the uterus wall.
• Uterine leiomyoma: A condition which is characterized by a benign tumour of the uterus derived from smooth muscle
• Vague symptoms: Vague, unclear, mild or non-specific symptoms
