Glossary for Oral thrush
- AIDS: A term given to HIV patients who have a low CD4 count (below 200) which means that they have low levels of a type of immune cell called T-cells. AIDS patients tend to develop opportunistic infections and cancers. Opportunistic infections are infections that would not normally affect a person with a healthy immune system. The HIV virus is a virus that attacks the body's immune system.
- Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
- Candidiasis: Fungal infection of moist areas such as mouth or vagina
- Canker sores: Ulcers of the mouth or nearby areas
- Cheek symptoms: Symptoms affecting the cheek region
- Cheilosis: Inflammation of the lips where there is scaling and fissures.
- Clotrimazole - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Clotrimazole (an antifungal medication) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
- Cold sores: Skin cores on the skin, face, or lips.
- Diabetes: Failing or reduced ability of the body to handle sugars.
- Diphtheria: Infectious bacterial respiratory disease
- Dry mouth: A condition characterized by the sensation of a dry mouth
- Dysplasia: Disordered growth in epithelium, typified by a loss in uniformity and normal architecture of the cells.
- Erythema multiforme: An allergic inflammatory skin disorder which has a variety of causes and results in skin and mucous membrane lesions that affect mainly the hands, forearms, feet, mouth nose and genitals.
- Fluconazole - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Fluconazole (an antifungal drug) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
- Fungal infections: Any condition caused by fungus.
- Geographic Tongue: A form of tongue inflammation where smooth, migrating patches form on the tongue.
- Glossodynia: A rare condition where there is a burning sensation in the mouth and tongue.
- Herpes: Virus with one subtype causing cold sores and another causing genital herpes.
- ICF syndrome: A very rare, recessively inherited syndrome characterized mainly by a weak immune system and facial anomalies.
- Immune deficiency conditions: Any of various diseases that suppress the immune system.
- LADD Syndrome: A very rare genetic disorder characterized by ear, teeth and tear duct abnormalities.
- Lacrimoauriculodentodigital syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by ear, teeth and tear duct abnormalities.
- Leukoplakia: A mouth disorder where white patches form on the inside of the mouth and on the tongue. Mostly occurs in older people.
- Leukoplakia, Hairy: Irregular white patches on the tongue or inside the mouth that tend to occur mainly in HIV patients but may also occur in immunocompromised patients. The white patches appear hairy or corrugated due to protrusions on the surface. The lesions may be mistaken for oral thrush but can be differentiated by the fact that oral thrush lesions can be moves or scraped off whereas hair leukoplakia lesions can't. The pathogen is believed to be the Epstein-Barr virus.
- Lichen planus: Skin rash
- Mononucleosis: Common infectious virus.
- Mouth conditions: Any condition that affects the mouth
- Nezelof's syndrome: An immune deficiency disorder where the cells that normally fight infection don't work properly and patients suffer frequent severe infections.
- Nystatin - Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Nystatin during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
- Oral Ulcer: An open sore inside the mouth.
- Oral leukoplakia: A mouth characterized by white spots or patches in the mucous membranes on the tongue and inside the mouth.
- Oral thrush: Candida fungal infection of the mouth.
- Pemphigus: A rare group of autoimmune skin disorders where blisters or raw sores develop on the skin and mucous membranes. The bodies immune system destroys proteins the hold skin cells together resulting in blistering. The condition can be life-threatening if untreated.
- Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
- Respiratory infections: Any infection that occurs to the respiratory system
- Sjogren's Syndrome: Autoimmune disease damaging the eye tear ducts and other glands.
- Skin color changes: Skin changes such as redness, blueness, or whitening.
- Stomatitis: Mouth lining inflammation or infection
- Throat white patches: White patches inside the throat
- Thyroid disorders: Any disorder of the thyroid gland.
- Tongue Conditions: Any condition that affects the tongue
- Tonsilitis: Inflammation of the tonsils in the throat.
- Vaginal candidiasis: Fungal infection of the vagina, sometimes called thrush.
- White tongue: White spots, patches or coating of the tongue
- Xerostomia: A medical term for a dry mouth due to insufficient saliva. There are numerous causes of a dry mouth including medications and nerve damage.
