People with a family history of pancreatic cancer should particularly avoid smoking as they risk having their smoking trigger the development of the cancer. Thus, it has been observed that smokers with a family history of pancreatic cancer have been found to develop the cancer at an earlier age. 5-10% of all pancreatic cancers are hereditary. About 32,000 people develop pancreatic cancer each year in the US with about 4% surviving 5 years after diagnosis. The cancer is often not diagnosed until it has spread to other body parts because there is no effective screening available.
