An irresistible compulsion to move one's legs due to discomfort, burning, tingling or itching is often misdiagnosed as muscle spasms, or reactions to anxiety, stress or tiredness. Restless leg syndrome is a relatively commonly condition that causes the sufferer to pace, jiggle or move continuously whether upright or lying down to relieve the irritation in their legs. It can be influenced by periods of inactivity, relaxation, sitting for a prolonged amount of time, and anemia. It can also be associated with pregnancy, kidney disease, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and peripheral neuropathy. Treatment of the underlying cause, i.e. giving iron supplements, can reduce the severity of, or cure the illness.
