A man was wrongly diagnosed with throat cancer after complaining about difficulty swallowing and was given 12 months to live. He had surgery to remove his gullet and only then was it discovered that he had never had cancer. The man suffered long-term side effects as a result of the misdiagnosis. Complications during surgery required the removal of his spleen. He then developed pneumonia and an abscess in his lung. Further treatment left him only able to eat small quantities and he can't consume food and drink together. He also suffers from stomach acid backflow into his mouth. The man lost his job and his relationship as a result. The misdiagnosis resulted from contaminated forceps in the pathology lab. After suing for negligence, the man received 192,000 pounds including costs.
