Research results from the Mayo Clinic published in the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science has shown that eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) cause the mucus accumulation and lung dysfunction that occurs in asthmatics. The research proves that eosinophils are always present in asthmatics. It is believed that other allergic diseases, parasite infections and cancer may also require the presence of the eosinophils. These findings permit the development of new treatment and prevention methods.
