Allergic inflammatory reaction of the esophagus (eosinophilic esophagitis) is often misdiagnosed as GERD because it has similar symptoms. A biopsy needs to be done to determine which condition it is. Allergenic foods often associated with eosinophilic esophagitis are cow's milk, soy, egg, wheat and some airborne allergens. Symptoms of EE include stomach pain, chest pain, choking, cramping, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, failure to thrive, nausea, reflux not alleviated by normal reflux therapy, skin rash, vomiting and weight loss.
