Bakery workers more prone to asthma symptoms

A UK study involving 239 subjects found that 15% of subjects who worked in a supermarket bakery had asthma symptoms and 26% had eye or nose problems related to their job. These symptoms are a sign of work-related asthma or "baker's asthma". Asthma related symptoms included chest tightness, breathing difficulties, chest wheezing, chest whistling, runny nose, itchy nose, runny eyes, itchy eyes and sneezing. It was also found that approximately 25% of subjects had increased sensitization to certain bakery ingredients especially flour and additives.
