Asymptomatic thyroid problems can cause serious problems for pregnant women.

Studies show that even mild asymptomatic underactive thyroids may cause pregnancy problems such as premature birth or low IQ babies. However, it is not practical to test all pregnant women for thyroid function. Specialists believe that woman at high risk of having the disease should be tested prior to conceiving or in early stages of pregnancy. At risk women are those with a family or personal history of thyroid problems or other autoimmune disorders such as Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. Sufficient levels of iodine are required for proper thyroid functioning.
