The severity and types of symptoms of disorders that are considered a neurosis or neurotic disorder vary between the specific disorders and from person to person.
Excessive anxiety and fear are common symptoms of and/or underlie many disorders that are considered a neurosis or neurotic disorder. Other common symptoms include complaints of physical symptoms that do not appear to have a medical cause. These may include palpitations, rapid heart rate$, hyperventilation, muscle pain, abdominal pain, headache, numbness and tingling.
Symptoms of disorders that are considered a neurosis or neurotic disorder generally are severe enough to result in difficulties with interpersonal relationships. They can also result in such symptoms as low self esteem, anger, irritability, obsessive thoughts, obsessive behaviors, dependency and perfectionism.
People with disorders that are considered a neurosis or neurotic disorder do not have delusions or hallucination, which are symptoms of psychotic disorders. However, symptoms of disorders that are considered a neurosis or neurotic disorder can negatively affect the ability of a person to function effectively in the activities of daily living, such as going to work and school, caring for family, and taking care of basic needs.
