Wegener granulomatosis: a disease occurring mainly in the fourth and fifth decades that is characterized by necrotizing granulomas, vasculitis, and ulceration of the upper respiratory tract, with purulent rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction, and sometimes with otorrhea, hemoptysis, pulmonary infiltration and cavitation, and fever. Exophthalmos, involvement of the larynx and pharynx, and glomerulonephritis may occur. The underlying condition, a vasculitis affecting small vessels, is possibly caused by an immune disorder. Cases in which only the lungs are involved have been seen; isolated tracheal stenosis is increasingly recognized.lymphomatoid granulomatosis.

Wegener granulomatosis: A multisystemic disease of a complex genetic background. It is characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels (VASCULITIS) leading to damages in any number of organs. The common features include granulomatous inflammation of the RESPIRATORY TRACT and kidneys (GLOMERULONEPHRITIS). Most patients have measurable autoantibodies (ANTINEUTROPHIL CYTOPLASMIC ANTIBODIES) against neutrophil proteinase-3 (WEGENER AUTOANTIGEN).

Wegener's granulomatosis is an uncommon disease, characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels (vasculitis). This inflammation results in a reduction of oxygen in the blood and damages vital organs of the body by restricting blood flow to those organs and destroying normal tissue. Although vasculitis can damage any organ system, Wegener's granulomatosis primarily affects the respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, trachea [windpipe] and lungs) and the kidneys. This disorder can occur at any age and strikes men and women equally. It is rare in African Americans compared to whites. The cause of Wegener's granulomatosis is not known.
