Pulmonary trunk as an Organ

Pulmonary trunk (organ): The pulmonary trunk is one of the great vessels of the body. The pulmonary trunk carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. It runs from the right ventricle of the heart and branches into two sections, the right pulmonary artery and the left pulmonary artery, which carry blood to the smaller branches of arteries, the arterioles, and capillaries in each of the two lungs. Gas exchange occurs where the tiny capillaries surround and come in contact with the alveoli. Here the blood cells release carbon dioxide and pick up fresh oxygen. The pulmonary trunk is the only artery after birth that carries deoxygenated blood.

Conditions that afflict the pulmonary trunk include trauma, pulmonary hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and transposition of the great vessels.
