Growth hormone as an Organ

Growth hormone (organ): Growth hormone is one of the pituitary hormones, chemical substances made and/or stored by the three lobes of the pituitary gland. Growth hormone is produced and secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and controls a variety of bodily functions, including stimulating the division of cells, called mitosis, resulting in body growth. Growth hormone is vital to the normal growth and develoment of bones and muscles in children. Growth hormone also increases the use of fats for energy and the use of amino acids for the building, repair and replacement of proteins.

Growth hormone secretion is controlled by the hypothalamus. Conditions that can afflict growth hormone include obesity, hyposecretion of growth hormone, hypersecretion of growth hormone, empty sella syndrome, adenoma, hypopituitarism, and head trauma.
