Medical Research Breakthroughs and Migraine

Migraine patients beware: A study has indicated that people who overuse drugs with barbiturates or opiods like codeine, bultalbital and oxycodone for their migraines are at a higher risk for their headaches to become chronic. The study conducted by the national headache foundation, tested people who had been diagnosed with episodic headache- fewer than 15 days of headache a month. Those who took barbiturate and opiod containing medications for as little as eight days a month were twice as likely to develop chronic migraine a year later as those who didn’t. Hence strict limits for these types of drugs have to be enforced among people with migraine as a way of preventing their migraines from becoming more frequent and painful. There is no evidence that people who regularly used triptans or non steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen were at risk for developing chronic migraine.
