Prevention of Meningococcal disease

Prevention of Meningococcal disease: Introduction

Although a vaccine exists to protect against 4 types of meningococcus, it does not protect against all subtypes of meningococcus and cannot be used for children under 2 years. A newer vaccine called "Meningococcal C Conjugate Vaccine" is available that works for infants but it only protects against one subtype (Meningococcal C). Routine vaccination against meningococcal disease has not occurred because of the limitations and because its efficacy reduces within 3-5 years. Instead, the older vaccine is used only in epidemic situations, and is available to individuals on request. Interestingly, the US military has routinely used this older vaccination for years. The newer vaccine has already been used for routine infant vaccination in the United Kingdom and parts of Canada.
