Glossary for Injury
- Accidental injury: An injury that occurs accidentally
- Alcohol abuse: Excessive use of alcohol ranging from binge drinking to severe alcoholism
- Arthritis: General name for any type of joint inflammation, but often means age-related osteoarthritis.
- Bone cancer: Malignancy that occurs in the bone
- Breast abscess: Pus-filled abscess in the breast
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Hand or wrist problems; often from repetitive motion.
- Criminal injury: An injury occurring during the committal of a criminal action
- Earache: Pain in the ear called "otalgia"
- Edema: Fluid retention in tissues
- Exophthalmos: Protrusion of one or both eyes
- Genital herpes: Sexually transmitted infection of the genital region.
- Gout: Painful joints, most commonly the big toe.
- Growth plate injuries: Injury to the growing ends of young bones.
- Herpes: Virus with one subtype causing cold sores and another causing genital herpes.
- Hiccups: Noise and diaphragm muscle contractions (properly called "hiccoughs")
- Homicide: The killing of a person by another
- Irons-Bhan syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by lymphoedema in the legs, heart defects and a hydrocele (swollen testicles).
- Mastalgia: Generalized breast pain or tenderness
- Mastitis: Infected breast common in nursing mothers
- Non-Contagious Diseases: Any disease that is not contagious
- Non-genetic diseases: Any disease that does not have a genetic component
- Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition characterised by mechanical disrturbances due to degradation of joints. It is the most common form of arthritis, and the leading cause of chronic disability.
- Osteomyelitis: A bone inflammation caused by bacteria. The inflammation usually originates in another part of the body and is transported to the bone via the blood.
- Peptic Ulcer: Ulcer on the lining of the stomach or duodenum
- Podagra: A condition which is characterized by a gout like pain in the toe
- Sanderson-Fraser syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized by overlapping fingers, abnormally placed urethral opening in males, protruding eyes and Robin association (small jaw and downward displaced tongue).
- Superficial thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of a vein wall
- Tunglang-Savage-Bellman syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by hearing loss and abnormal salivary gland function.
