Glossary for Infective endocarditis
- Acute rheumatic fever: Bacterial joint infection with risk of heart complications.
- Aspergillosis: Infection with a fungus called Aspergillus.
- Bicuspid aortic valve: A heart defect where the aortic valve has only two leaflets instead of the normal three. The severity of the disorder is variable.
- Blood clots: Multiple coagulums that are located in the blood stream due to the aggregation of blood factors
- Brain abscess: Pus accumulating into an abscess on the brain
- Brucellosis: An infectious disease caused by the Brucella genus which is transmitted from animals to humans.
- Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
- Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
- Death: The cessation of life
- Fallot syndrome: A congenital heart disorder consisting of four heart defects - hole between the ventricles (ventricular septal defect), obstruction from right ventricles to the lungs (subpulmonary stenosis), overriding aorta and thickened right ventricle muscle.
- Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
- Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
- Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
- Hematuria: Blood in the urine
- Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
- Kidney Cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the kidneys
- Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
- Meningitis: Dangerous infection of the membranes surrounding the brain.
- Mitral-valve prolapse: A common heart condition that is often harmless.
- Night sweats: Night sweats is the occurrence of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) during sleep. The sufferer may or may not also suffer from excessive perspiration while awake.
- Poor appetite: Loss or reduction in appetite for food
- Rheumatic fever: An inflammatory disorder that can occur as a complication of untreated streptococcal bacterial infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The condition may affect the brain, skin, heart and joints.
- Rheumatic heart disease: Chronic heart condition due to heart damage from rheumatic fever
- Stroke: Serious brain event from bleeding or blood clots.
- Typhoid fever: Fever from bacterial food poisoning.
- Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
