Glossary for Erythema multiforme
- Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
- Blisters: Blistering of the skin.
- Canker sores: Ulcers of the mouth or nearby areas
- Caterpillar complication poisoning: The spines on certain caterpillars can cause a skin reaction as well as systemic symptoms if ingested. The nature of the symptoms vary depending on the species of caterpillar involved. Some only produce skin reactions whereas others can produce systemic symptoms.
- Coccidioidomycosis: An infectious disease caused by a fungus called Coccidioides immitis which is found in the soil. Transmission usually occurs through inhalation but can rarely occur through the skin. Very rarely, infection can spread throughout the body to involve the skin, bones, joints, lungs and central nervous system which can be fatal if untreated.
- Conjunctivitis: Contagious eye infection
- Dermatitis: General name for any type of skin inflammation.
- Eosinophilia: This is when there is an abnormal increase in the eosinophils in the blood
- Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita: An acquired autoimmune skin condition characterized by blisters which cause scarring on the skin of joints and sometimes the skull.
- Erythema: A condition which is characterized by redness of the skin due to congestion of the capillaries
- Erythema nodosum: Allergic skin condition usually on the legs
- Genital herpes: Sexually transmitted infection of the genital region.
- Histoplasmosis: Lung infection from fungus Histoplasma capsulatum
- Hives: Weals on the skin due to an allergic reaction.
- Keratitis: Any inflammation of the cornea of the eye
- Leprosy: A chronic, progressive infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae which causes skin sores and also affects the eyes, mucous membranes and peripheral nerves.
- Lichen planus: Skin rash
- Lyme disease: Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease caused by at least three species of bacteria belonging to the genus Borrelia.
- Mouth rash: Change in the skin which affects the color, appearance or texture.
- Mouth ulcers: Ulcers in the mouth membranes or oral areas
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae: Bacterial respiratory infection
- Oral Ulcer: An open sore inside the mouth.
- Oral lichen planus: An inflammatory condition involving the mucous lining inside the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums and throat.
- Oral thrush: Candida fungal infection of the mouth.
- Pemphigus: A rare group of autoimmune skin disorders where blisters or raw sores develop on the skin and mucous membranes. The bodies immune system destroys proteins the hold skin cells together resulting in blistering. The condition can be life-threatening if untreated.
- Pemphigus Vulgaris: A severe autoimmune skin disease characterized by blistering of the skin including the mucous membranes inside the mouth and esophagus.
- Rash: A reaction to the exposure of the skin to an allergen
- Red throat: Redness inside the throat
- Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
- Stevens-Johnson Syndrome: A rare but serious condition involving inflammation and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. It is believed to be an allergic reaction that can occur in response to some drugs or infectious diseases.
- Sutton disease 2: A rare condition characterized by recurring periods of painful inflamed mouth ulcers.
- Throat ulcers: Ulceration of the internal throat
- Thrush: A contagious disease which is caused by a fungus
- Tinea corporis: A condition which is characterized by tinea of glabrous skin
- Toxic epidermal necrolysis: A skin condition causing widespread blisters to erupt over greater than 30% of the body.
- Urticaria: A vascular reaction of the upper dermis that is marked by elevated patches
