Cysticercosis: An infectious disease caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium. If the larvae are ingested then a mild or asymptomatic tapeworm infection occurs. However, ingested eggs pass into the bloodstream where they can then enter various tissues and form the cysts that characterize cysticercosis.

Article Excerpts about Cysticercosis
Cysticercosis is an
infection caused by the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. Infection
occurs when the tapeworm larvae enter the body and form cysticerci (SIS-tuh-sir-KEY)
(cysts). When cysticerci are found in the brain, the condition is called
neurocysticercosis (NEW-row SIS-tuh-sir-KO-sis). (Source: excerpt from Cysticercosis: DPD)
Definitions of Cysticercosis:
Infection with CYSTICERCUS, a larval form of the various tapeworms of the genus Taenia (usually T. solium in man). In humans they penetrate the intestinal wall and invade subcutaneous tissue, brain, eye, muscle, heart, liver, lung, and peritoneum. Brain involvement results in NEUROCYSTICERCOSIS. Cysticercosis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Cysticercosis, or a subtype of Cysticercosis,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners,
currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000.
They list Cysticercosis as a "rare disease".
