    Chancroid: Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))

Chancroid results from Haemophilus ducreyi, a gram-negative Streptobacillus, and is transmitted through sexual contact. Poor hygiene may predispose males — especially those who are uncircumcised — to this disease.

This infection occurs worldwide but is particularly common in tropical countries; it affects more males than females.

    Chancroid: Chancroid - epidemiology
    (The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)

    • Probably underrecognized and underreported
    • In underdeveloped countries, it is a major cause of genital ulcer syndrome.
    • Importantly, it is a major cofactor in the transmission of HIV. Transmission occurs via sexual contact with an individual with an ulcer.
    • Seen more commonly in males; females are more likely to be asymptomatic.

    Chancroid - incidence

From 1996–2000 the incidence has declined from 388 to 82 reported cases per year in the US.

    About prevalence and incidence statistics:

The term 'prevalence' of Chancroid usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Chancroid at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Chancroid refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Chancroid diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.
