Glossary for Chagas disease

Alopecia: Various types of hair loss or balding
Anemia: Reduced ability of blood to carry oxygen from various possible causes.
Arrhythmias: Irregularity in the heart's beating rhythm.
Chagas Cardiomyopathy: Heart disease that can occur as a complication of a chronic parasitic infection caused by the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by insect bites or blood transfusions.
Chancre: An ulcer like eruption that is located on an epithelial surface
Coma: Prolonged unconsciousness
Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
Constipation: Difficult or dry bowel movements
Coronary heart disease: Disease affecting the heart's arteries (narrowed arteries)
Death: The cessation of life
Dilated cardiomyopathy: A rare chronic heart muscle condition where one or both heart ventricles are dilated or have impaired contractility.
Eyelid swelling: A swelling located on the eyelid
Face swelling: Swelling affecting the face
Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
High fever: Where a patient has an elevated temperature
Inflammatory bowel disease: Inflammatory bowel disease refers to digestive symptoms resulting from chronic bowel inflammation. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are two of the main subtypes of the disease. Scientists have discovered an array of genetic mutations which can result in an increased susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease. Not all people with the genetic anomaly will develop the condition but it can increase the risk especially if other environmental factors are also present. The severity of the disease that develops is variable.
Intrauterine Growth Retardation: Slowly growing fetus in the womb during pregnancy
Malaria: A parasitic disease transmitted through mosquito bites.
Megacolon: Extreme bowel distention
Myocarditis: Inflammation of the myocardium (muscle walls of the heart)
Parasitic Conditions: A condition that is characterised by another organism living off another organism
Protozoan Conditions: Any condition caused by the infection of the human being by a protozoan organism
Rheumatic fever: An inflammatory disorder that can occur as a complication of untreated streptococcal bacterial infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The condition may affect the brain, skin, heart and joints.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever: A bacterial disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks. The condition causes fever and a characteristic rash and may be fatal in severe or untreated cases.
Sick sinus syndrome: Heart rhythm disorder
Toxic megacolon: It is a life threatening complication.
Toxocariasis: A parasitic roundworm (Toxocara canis or Toxocara cati) infection that normally occurs in cats and dogs but can be transmitted to humans by ingesting the larvae or eggs. The infection may be asymptomatic or severe and symptoms depend on where the larvae travel to when they migrate through the body.
Toxoplasmosis: Infection often caught from cats and their feces.
Trypanosomiasis, east-African: A rare infectious disease caused by a parasite called Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and is transmitted through the bite of an infected Tsetse fly. The infection causes an acute illness with symptoms occurring from days to weeks after infection. Death relatively common, especially in untreated cases.
