Cerebral palsy:
Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))
See Causes of cerebral palsy, for a more detailed description of the causes of CP. Incidence is slightly higher in premature neonates (anoxia plays the greatest role in contributing to CP) and in neonates who are small for their gestational age. CP is slightly more common in males than in females. For every 1,000 births, 2 to 4 neo-nates are affected.
Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type of CP, affecting about 50% of CP patients.Athetoid cerebral palsy affects about 20% of CP patients, ataxic cerebral palsy accounts for another 10% of these patients, and the remaining 20% of patients are mixed, with a combination of symptoms.

Cerebral palsy:
Causes
(Handbook of Diseases)
Conditions that result in cerebral anoxia, hemorrhage, or other CNS damage are probably responsible for cerebral palsy.
Prenatal causes
Prenatal causes include maternal infection (especially rubella), radiation, anoxia, toxemia, maternal diabetes, abnormal placental attachment, vaginal bleeding, malnutrition, and isoimmunization.
Perinatal and birth difficulties
Examples of perinatal and birth difficulties include inadequate oxygenation of the brain, forceps delivery, breech presentation, placenta previa, abruptio placentae, depressed maternal vital signs from general or spinal anesthetic, and prolapsed cord with delay in the delivery of the head. Premature birth, prolonged or unusually rapid labor, and multiple birth (especially infants born last in a multiple birth) may also cause cerebral palsy as well as bleeding into the brain.
Infection or trauma during infancy
Cerebral palsy may follow kernicterus resulting from erythroblastosis fetalis, brain infection, head trauma, prolonged anoxia, brain tumor, cerebral circulatory anomalies causing blood vessel rupture, and systemic disease resulting in cerebral thrombosis or embolus.

Cerebral Palsy:
Cerebral Palsy - etiology
(The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)
- Not apparent in most cases. A more recently recognized perinatal factor is the presence of chorioamnionitis; mild or even subclinical cases may have increased association with CP.
- Epidemiologic studies indicate 2 types of vulnerability to CP:
- Prematurity: Vulnerability of the periventricular white matter between 28 and 32 weeks of gestation results in periventricular leukomalacia.
- IUGR: Fetal growth retardation associated with CNS dysgenesis, non-CNS malformation, teratogens, growth retardation, evidence of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy more often seen
