Atherosclerosis: Atherosclerosis is a syndrome affecting arterial blood vessels. It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries, in large part due to the accumulation of macrophage white blood cells and promoted by low density (especially small particle) lipoproteins (plasma proteins that carry cholesterol and triglycerides) without adequate removal of fats and cholesterol from the macrophages by functional high density lipoproteins (HDL). It is commonly referred to as a hardening or furring of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries.

Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fatty deposits called plaque
on the inside walls of arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that
carry oxygen and blood to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body.
As plaque builds up in an artery, the artery gradually narrows and can
become clogged. As an artery becomes more and more narrowed, less blood
can flow through. The artery may also become less elastic ("hardening of
the arteries"). Atherosclerosis is the main cause of a group of diseases
called cardiovascular diseases—diseases of the heart and blood

Atherosclerosis is the hardening of the arteries. Your arteries are
blood vessels that carry oxygen and blood to muscles in your body. In
hardening of the arteries, fatty materials build up on the walls inside of
your arteries. These materials are made up of cholesterol and fat. The
more cholesterol in your blood, the more fatty material can build up, and
the more narrow and hard the artery can get. When an artery becomes narrow
and hard, not enough oxygen and blood get to your muscles. Hardening of
the arteries can happen anywhere in your body. You may have blockage in
the arteries that carry blood to the heart, leg, or brain. These blockages
can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, leg pain, and even heart

Atherosclerosis is a type of
arteriosclerosis (or thickening and hardening of the arteries). As we
age, some hardening of the arteries can occur naturally. When a person
has atherosclerosis, the inner walls of the arteries become narrower due
to a buildup of plaque. Plaque results from deposits of fat,
cholesterol, and other substances. Blood clots form, blocking blood
flow, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. High blood
cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and not
being physically active all put you at greater risk for
