Cure Research for Alopecia Areata
Medical Research Breakthroughs and Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata: Researchers in Australia have found patients with patchy hair loss or alopecia
areata should understand that there is no reliable, safe, effective,
long-term treatment for the regrowth of hair. Alopecia areata means patchy hair
loss occurring commonly over the scalp and some parts of body, affecting
people less than 20 yrs of age. This is commonly caused when the immune
system attacks the hair follicle. It has also been linked with emotional and
physical stress and in some the cause in unknown.
The studies, measured the effectiveness of several
treatments, including topical and oral corticosteroids and topical
cyclosporine. These drugs dampen the immune system to try to stop it from
becoming confused and attacking the body. Other treatments included in the
study were photodynamic therapy (which exposes the skin to light) and topical
minoxidil (Rogaine). The Researchers found none of these patients had
significant hair growth post treatment. They suggest that patients undergoing
the treatment must be explained about the outcomes and risks and other harmful
effects of the treatment. If nothing is done, the hair grows spontaneously
again. One small study also found application of onion juice on the bald
patches showed hair regrowth and also has been used to treat infections. The
person using any of the treatment must be completely educated about the risks
of the treatment which may be harmful long term.
