Glossary for ACTH Deficiency

• ACTH deficiency, isolated: An inherited deficiency of adrenocorticotropic hormone. The condition results from a genetic defect.
• Anorexia: Any type of appetite loss; often refers to anorexia nervosa
• Combined pituitary hormone deficiency, non acquired, non syndromic: Deficiency of more than one pituitary hormone not associated with any other malformations or abnormalities. The condition may be due to a genetic defect or the result of tumors, surgery or radiation therapies. Symptoms can vary considerable depending on which hormones are affected.
• Culler-Jones syndrome: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by hypopituitarism (low pituitary hormone level) which affects other hormone levels and an extra little finger.
• Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar level
• Hypopituitarism: A disorder caused by reduced pituitary hormone levels. Hormones produce by the pituitary gland produces growth hormones, prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone, antidiuretic hormone and others.
• Hypopituitarism postaxial polydactyly: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by hypopituitarism (low pituitary hormone level) which affects other hormone levels and an extra little finger.
• Low blood pressure: Blood pressure that is too low
• Low blood sugar: Low blood sugar level
• Muscle weakness: A condition which is characterized by an inability of the muscles to function at their full strenght
• Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
• Obesity due to pro-opiomelanocortin Deficiency: A form of monogenic obesity caused by a genetic mutation which results in a deficiency of pro-opiomelanocortin. Monogenic obesity is obesity caused by a mutation in a single gene.
• Panhypopituitarism: A rare condition where all pituitary hormones are absent or reduced. The condition may be congenital or acquired through such things as pituitary tumors. The pituitary gland regulates the activity of other endocrine glands as well as controlling growth. Other endocrine glands include adrenal, parathyroid, thyroid, pancreas, ovaries and testes. Symptoms can vary greatly depending on the degree of deficiency of the various hormones.
• Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
• Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
