Glossary for Acanthocytosis

  • Abetalipoproteinemia: A rare disorder involving abnormalities in fat metabolism. The resulting insufficiency of fats and vitamins affect the normal development and function of the body.
  • Anorexia Nervosa: A disorder where a distorted sense of body image leads to self-starvation to the point of death in some cases.
  • Bleeding symptoms: Any type of bleeding symptoms.
  • Choreoacanthocytosis amyotrophic: A rare inherited disease involving neurological degeneration and abnormal red blood cell shape. The disorder progresses slowly and causes involuntary movements, loss of cognitive ability, behavioral changes and seizures.
  • Chronic diarrhoea: Diarrhoea lasting for more than 3 weeks
  • Chylomicron Retention Disease: A rare condition characterized by the inability of the intestines to absorb fats from the diet which cause failure to thrive in infants.
  • Cirrhosis of liver: Chronic liver disease wherein normal liver parenchyma is replaced by fibrous tissue.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes: Where the lymph glands are swollen more than there normal size
  • FACWA syndrome: A rare progressive neurological disorder involving degeneration of part of the brain (basal ganglia) and muscle wasting.
  • Foul-smelling stool: The occurrence of stool that has an offensive smell
  • Homozygous hypobetalipoproteinemia: Inherited low blood betalipoprotein level. The type and severity of symptoms is determined by whether or not there are some betalipoproteins in the body.
  • Hypothyroidism: Too little thyroid hormone production.
  • Jaundice: Bile or liver problem causing yellowness.
  • Mc Leod neuroacanthocytosis syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized by neuromuscular, blood and central nervous system symptoms. The disease is slowly progressive.
  • Pale stool: Unusual paleness of stool
  • Paleness: Whitening or pallor of the skin
  • Wolman Disease with Hypolipoproteinemia and Acanthocytosis: A very rare condition characterized by the symptoms of Wolman disease (lipid malabsorption, vomiting, growth failure, adrenal calcification) and low blood lipoprotein levels and acanthocytosis.
